굶어 죽은 북극곰을 만난 사진기자는 차마 카메라를 들이밀 수 없었다

지구온난화로 인해 북극곰이 처한 현실을 적나라하게 보여주는 충격적인 사진이 공개됐다.

최근 미국 국립지리학회가 창간한 잡지 내셔널 지오그래픽(National Geographic) 공식 인스타그램에는 사진 한 장이 공유됐다.

내셔널 지오그래픽 소속 사진기자 폴 니클렌(Paul Nicklen)이 발견해 촬영한 해당 사진에는 죽어있는 북극곰이 포착됐다.

니클렌의 설명에 따르면, 사진을 촬영한 장소는 노르웨이였다.

Last summer I traveled with a group of friends to Svalbard, Norway in search of polar bears. We went to my favorite spot where I have always been able to find bears roaming around on sea ice throughout the summer. On this occasion, however, we didn’t find any sea ice and we never found any bears alive. We did find two dead bears in this location and other groups found more dead bears. These bears were so skinny, they appeared to have died of starvation, as in the absence of sea ice, they were not able to hunt seals. In all of my years of growing up in the Arctic and later, working as a biologist, I had never found a dead polar bear. It is now becoming much more common. 과거 이곳에서는 여름에도 빙하가 늘 있었으며, 북극곰을 찾기도 쉬웠다. 그러나 이번에는 달랐다.

니클렌은 “이번에는 빙하를 전혀 발견하지 못했다”고 밝혔다.

그리고 살아있는 북극곰도 찾지 못했다. 사진처럼 뼈만 남은 채 죽어있는 북극곰이 여럿이었다.

니클렌은 “이곳에서만 죽은 북극곰을 두 마리 발견했고, 근처에서는 더 많이 발견됐다”며 “죽은 북극곰들은 모두 굶주림으로 죽은 듯 죄다 앙상하게 말라 있었다”고 설명했다.

북극곰은 보통 빙하 위에 올라타서 바다표범을 잡아먹고 산다. 그러나 지구온난화 때문에 빙하가 녹아버렸고, 먹이를 구하지 못한 북극곰들이 자꾸만 죽어가는 것.

실제 촬영된 사진을 살펴봐도 땅 위에 얼음 한 조각 없이 흙이 그대로 드러난 모습이었다.

지구온난화가 가속하면서 얼음이 녹고, 터전을 잃은 북극곰이 죽는 일은 점점 더 흔해지고 있다.

과학자들은 야생에서 생활하는 2,500마리가량의 북극곰 중 20%가 최근 10년간 굶주림으로 사망했으며, 결국 2050년에는 북극곰이 멸종될 것으로 전망하고 있다.
